Employer Top Tips
This year we will once again be providing an e-booklet full of top tips from employers for anyone who attends the fair on the day. You will gain access to this via the fair guide. In the mean time, we have some general tips on the following subject from employers already confirmed for the fair this year -
Why is it important to network with graduate recruiters face to face rather than purely research on line?
Asda said, "From our perspective at Asda, we will want to know about the student and what they want. With a brand such as ours there are preconceptions around roles we might have and a career in a 'supermarket' which we can dispel but it's much easier of we get a feel for what the student is looking for.
For a positive impact, definitely go with an open mind.
Know what you want and be able to articulate it, even if you are quite open to ideas, there will be things such as location, salary or work life balance that matter to you more.
Don't go straight in with 'What can you do for me' as it's a competitive market and a two way thing.
Be honest about what you are looking for, if you have a specific qualification that leads you down a specific career path (e.g. chemical engineering) you don't have to engage in a 10 minute conversation about a company that won't ever fit your aspirations. It's s ok to say it's not what you are looking for. We will try and always be honest with you if we think that too.
Don't just take a leaflet, in our case (and I am sure in others) the leaflet is a tool but it doesn't tell you what a 2 minute conversation with one of our colleagues will tell you. Our offer is so varied it can't be crammed on a leaflet but we can get a lot more information across in a chat."
